Small Victories

As a writer, I’ve always had a problem with finishing things. I’ve started many projects with the best of intentions, but rarely if ever do I see them through to a conclusion. Labyrinth is 2 volumes in with a third near completion, and the fourth fully outlined. I’ve hit several “project complete” milestones, and have books to show for it, but it is still at least a year before I can look at the finished pages for the entire series and know that it is finished. Too early to think about that now — plenty more to do!

Tonight, however, I did complete another major writing project — a Choose Your Own Adventure style project for publication this fall. In turning in the finished manuscript, I not only see one story through to the end, but 30! All in one tidy hyperlinked package. At 25k words, it’s not War and Peace, or technically even (grown up) novel length, but it was fun, it’s done (for now) and I learned a lot in the process. As soon as the project is actually announced, I’ll link to it here. For now, you’ll just have to put up with my anonymous gloating.

I have that problem with drawing…I’ll start one picture and before I know it, I’ve got an idea for another, so I end up putting that first picture on hold and then proceed to forget about it. Repeat that process for pretty much everything I draw and you’ve got quite a lot of wasted paper.

That’s why I’d probably never be able to draw an entire manga…I’d have to force myself to draw stuff (Which just isn’t fun). I’d probably be better as an idea person, with someone else putting pencil to paper.

And I think all the ‘Choose your own Adventure’ books got together one day and unanimously decided never to let me live. I can never make it through those things, no matter how many times I start over from the beginning.

Can you tell us anymore about your new project? Or is it a secret for now?

Come to think of it, Labyrinth would be an absolutely perfect choice for a “Choose Your Own Adventure”. You’re constantly having to choose one door/pathway in the maze, and you never get to learn where all the doors/pathways you didn’t take lead to. Didn’t you ever wonder about the paths that Sarah *didn’t* take in the movie? With a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book, you’d get to find out!

Congrats on finishing your project! It sounds pretty rad.
