Returning to Labyrinth since 2007!

Monster Making

So yesterday saw the release of the Spore Creature Creator, a preview of the highly anticipated game that comes out this fall, and I had to give it a test drive. For those who haven’t been following the game, Spore is basically a life simulator that goes from the cellular to the interplanetary level. While hundreds of other nerds immediately flooded youtube with videos of phallic spore abominations, I decided to attempt to create something a little more… family-friendly. So here he is, everyone’s favorite monster, Ludo!

i’m disappointed you didn’t give him a throbbing member, as is fitting for all spore videos.

I love you, you nerdy man, you!

I’m ashamed to say I’ve got members of my own family (one of my late mothers’ sisters, who has children who are both around eight) who thinks Labyrinth is unfit for children. Yet they can watch Hocus Pocus, Corpse Bride, and Nightmare before Christmas (not that those are bad, I love those too). Sometimes I think seh assumes it’s bad just because I like it and I’m the ‘weird one.’ And because this aunt of mine has money her other siblings automatically assume she’s right about everything without having ever seen the film…

Aww! That’s so cute! You should try making some goblins next!

@Mandy: Hocus Pocus scared the be-jezus out of me when I was little…especially the credits at the end because of that creepy book with one eye (I’d hide behind the couch until they were over)
And I have to admit, Labyrinth did scare me as a kid. I have no idea why, but my memories of it made it seem like it was such a scary movie.

  4. Mandy says:

To me the creepiest children’s film is stil Return to Oz. I love it but that thing was dark. And when you check the implications you realize Bellinda and the blond girl are probably dead in Dorothy’s ‘real world’.

And yes, he should make Skub next!

  5. Magma says:

Ludo’s SO CUTE! I actually had not heard of the game before reading your post…..sounds a lil gross……but watching Ludo was SO FUNNY!

Labyrinth never scared me. Now Dark Crystal–THAT scared me! The scene where the Emperor died and his body crumbled to dust within seconds gave me nightmares for weeks. Really, anything the Skekses did freaked me out.

And you’re right, Mandy, Return to Oz was pretty creepy as well. I mean, it starts out in an insane asylum with Dorothy about to get shock therapy, for cryin’ out loud!

That’s awesome! I’ve been wracking my brain trying to think of other homage characters to make and Labyrinth is perfect. So far I only have the demo though; the full version doesn’t come out in Europe til the 27th :( I’m adding you to my youtube subscriptions :D

Aww, Ludo’s so cute. Now would be the appropriate time to admit I have a Ludo tribute hanging in my apartment:

And Labyrinth scared me when I was little. Jareth and his magic balls that turned into snakes scared me. But, as is often the case, a viewing several years later changed things considerably.

  9. Kristi O. says:

When I first saw Labyrinth, the only scene that stuck with me after was were Sarah was wandering the Labyrinth, using her lipstick to mark where she’d been.

But for some reason I imagined it as being in the middle of the night, with rain and thunder, and with Sarah crying, and everything being ten times scarier.

Which is just plain weird because at the time of this scene, Jareth is singing “Dance Magic Dance”

  10. Crystal says:

Hey, Kristi O, i had something like when i 13 or 14; i wanted to watch Labyrinth, but i couldn’t remember anything about except the Goblin King (go figure:) and Toby, and i was frightened, but after i watched it, it wasn’t as scary ;D

  11. Ginger says:

Jake, you are my idol! My beautiful, nerdy idol! This is amazing! I just adore Ludo!

Labyrinth didn’t scare me a bit, although that isn’t really fair, because I was seventeen when I first saw it, but the Dark Crystal did scare me a little bit, and I completely agree that Return to Oz is scary as hell (Still, after all these years, if you’re me!)
