So one week later, I’m far from the only person attempting to create 80s film icons with the spore creature creator. I collected a few other noteworthy creations that I found, some Henson-related, some not. Plenty more if you search on you tube.
Keep in mind that right now the Spore Creature Creator just allows you to create creatures on an empty stage. Come this fall, these creatures will be populating planets and galaxies and building civilizations. I wonder if EA thought through the legal ramifications of all these copyrighted characters appearing in their game. Should be interested to see if anything comes of that.
Another take on Ludo (Hair is a nice touch, but I like mine better. :P)
Fiery! (with unfortunate music)
Skeksis
Gonzo
And here are a few others Labyrinth-era creatures that look pretty snazzy:
Gizmo:
Unicorn! (We’ll pretend its from Legend):
And my personal favorite, FALCOR!

Oh man, I haven’t even thought of that. That could be bad. I remember when City of Heroes first came out and people were making Marvel character lookalikes and NCSoft was sued. I hope something like that doesn’t happen with Spore…

What? No Hogwa—I mean Hoggle? Such a pity. I wouldn’t mind seeing someone try to make Jareth (Though it might make my eyes bleed). I find it fitting that Gonzo will be populating someone’s imaginary planet (If you believe what happened in ‘Muppets from Space” is canon).
And maybe since the creatures never seem to look 100% like who they’re supposed to be, that’ll keep EA’s butt covered legally. I guess it all depends on if people see it as something sue-worthy (Which in these days, may lead to trouble. People sue over the littlest things because they’re convinced they’ll get a huge payout).

I doubt there’s much that can be done to EA over it. It’s what the fans make of it. That’s like suing Crayola because someone drew a Return to Labyrinth Fan art with crayons. Sims and IMVU have a lot of 3D Copyrighted characters floating around. Some of them are very detailed.

I think where EA might get into trouble is if there is any sort of cash for credit system built into Spore, whereby characters can be sold as a function of the game. If there’s a real-world value (through either actual money or advertiser value) to a user-gen, copyrighted likeness *that’s* when the lawyers will start sharpening their claws.
