In mere days I’ll be debuting the cover art to Return to Labyrinth volume 3. In the meantime, I thought I’d have a little game for Gobblin readers. Guess which combination of characters will be on the cover and what the overriding color will be. Whoever guesses correctly, or comes closest, will have a goblin named after them in Volume 4!

I’m thinking that Toby, Sarah, and Moppet will be on the cover. ^_^ *Though, it’ll be cool if Skub was on it to! <3*
This is hard! I am thinking King Toby would need to be on the cover, but perhaps the focus shifts in vol. 3 after he’s thrown into the oubliette (um, or whatever will befall said king). And “There Will Be Skub,” after all … but who knows if that will make Skub a cover model? And perhaps Hana will get her wings and, together, she and Stank will do something amazing. Obviously, I’d love to see Sarah on the cover—actually, Sarah and Moppet together would be rad—because in the RtL in my head, Sarah is the star. And Jareth was on vol. 1, but not vol. 2 … And Mizumi’s working on something important (and undoubtedly diabolical). And Moulin and Drumlin will be mad at Moppet. And then there are those lizards … Again, I say, this is hard.
I have too many clues, so I’ll guess what I hope is the cover inspiration: the movie’s stars! Namely, Jareth, Sarah, and Toby facing adversity labyrinthy adversity … and the color is red.
I am certain that that is not right and that I will feel like a fool in a few days but, if, in some shocking turn of events, I happen to win this contest, kindly consider naming my goblin Pilot Inspektor Riesgraf Lee.
Hmm..I’m going to go with Sarah, Moppet, Mizumi, and Jareth (sounds about right) and I think black and red are the right colors, if I am right, it would be a first, if not, I will live. Me? A goblin? Uh… how about Bookworm, I like it
Hmmm…we’ll have to be scientific about this…the last two volumes had the characters that were important to the plot on it. The first had Toby and Jareth for obvious reasons… the second had Toby, Mizumi (who’s becoming the villian), the Wiseman (Providing us with an prophecy to drive the plot), and Toby (For obvious reasons again).
With the last volume’s revelation about Moppet, I think that the next volume will have Sarah and Moppet on the cover together, because they’ll likely become very important to the story/plot beginning in the next book.
I don’t think there’ll be more than three characters on the cover, I think it may end up a bit cluttered with more (Though Kouyu is a professional, so maybe she knows how to use the space better than I can imagine).
I think that the third character will be Toby, since he is the focus of the series, and it’s his relationship between Sarah and Moppet that will provide a bridge between the two in the story (Sarah will likely enter the Labyrinth to find Toby, and Moppet is already present in the Labyrinth to help Toby) . Though I’m sort of wondering if this will be the first cover Toby isn’t on though, just to throw me off. If it’s not Toby, then it’s probably Jareth, since their looks are fundamentally the same (Blond hair, blue eyes, kingly attire).
And the colour…the first volume was pink/purply….the second was blue/green….I think I’ll go with brown and yellow-orange, because I think it would work best with the hair/skin colours of Moppet and Sarah.
So to sum up:
Characters: Moppet, Sarah, and Toby
Colours: Brown/Yellow-Orange
Huuurrrrr…god I don’t think I can’t wait until we know who wins….I have butterflies (Or faeries)!
I’d love to see you try and ‘Goblinize’ my last name…I won’t list it here, but it’s 12 letters long and Austrian, so it’d take some tinkering to have it fit in with names like ‘Hoggle’ and ‘Skub’.
i don’t work for any of those, can i play? because i think you should name a goblin after the cat. ^_^
Toby, Moppet, Spittledrum
Blue
umm….Purple and/or black for the color and I think Sarah, maybe her cat Morgan, those two slug looking things at the end of vol 2 (commenting on the thunderstorm though we could only understand one of them) and Jareth.
Sarah and Moppet (about equal) and Jareth.
Colors will be grays, whites and earthtones.
Toby, Sarah, and Moppet. And purple. Cuz it rules
Can’t wait for it!
Jareth, Sarah, Toby, Moppet!
With a Green theme =)
I’m guessing maybe . . . Jareth, Sarah, and Moppet, and for the color well . . . blue or purple. Im prob not right but thought I’d give it a try.
I’m thinking Jareth/Sarah and the color scheme is in the yellow and green family.
I think probably Toby, Jareth, and Sarah, with a cool color scheme, blue and purple shades.
Hm…for my guess….I know that Toby will be the main character for the cover…and that you haven’t used Sarah or Moppet though they are important to this story line.HOWEVER, it was surprising to see the Wiseman on the last book…so….could this mean the use of a minor character?
As for the color scheme…you used Puple/Pink/Orange for the 1st vol. and Blue/Green/Gold for the 2nd vol.
My guess for this contest is:
Characters: Toby, Sarah, Moppet and Skub
Color scheme: Dark Blue/Purple
I do hope I get this! My friends always make fun of my for being such a nerd of Labyrinth…and this would be so much fun to shove back in their face! Haha! And I’m also very creative when it comes to making names….so I would love the challenge of creating a goblin name!
I hope I win! But I’ll also be happy just to see the cover anyway!
Well, I’d say at least Sarah and Jareth , and Toby.
The color scheme ? Gray.
Hmmm. This is tougher than I thought.
I would say at least Sarah and Jareth, since in volume 2, it seemed to hint a new focus of the story in the series.
I would also guess Moppet and Skub as likely possibility, since it be hinted that Skub would be
more involved in volume 3, and Moppet because remarkable likeness to Sarah was discovered in the end.
I do not rule the possibility that Toby could be on the cover, since of course he has been on the first volumes. However, he was a of course the main focus of the story. Though I believe he still is, in volume 2, it seemed to hint in the end, that the series is now expanding outside Toby’s point of view. Not to mention, if any of the characters I have mentioned are correct, there will be probably three main characters.
Five or at least higher than five would be too crowded.
There is one other faint possibility, since Sarah will be visited by her past, her friends, or least one of them, might appear, but that’s only a slim chance, since they only made brief appearances.
As for color background, that surprisingly harder. You pretty much used warm colors for the first volume and cool colors for volume 2.
However, since stormy weather was last seen in volume 2, hinting the present and the past are going clash, I would guess stormy colors, such as dark blue, purple with a light yellow and pale grayish green to balance it out so it doesn’t become too dark, and would highlight shadows like flashes of lighting.
Another a reason, would be since it mentioned some time ago that we would see a dark, deceptive side of Jareth.
Red, Black and Grey at first seem to be obvious choice, but in comparison of with first two, it would seem too extreme to have such dark colors of a suddenly.
Well, that’s my input.
Greatly anxious to read the next book as well as curious to see if any my guesses were close.
I think Sarah and Moppet will be on the cover and I think that the color will be a dark blue, which would look awesome
Sarah, Moppet and Jareth.
Oh, crap, I forgot to add the colour scheme. Guess I’m out. I was going to say gold and blue.
My guess:
Characters: Moppet, Jareth and Sarah
Colors: Green and yellow
Characters: Sarah, Moppet, Jareth, Toby and just for fun those two lizard nameless creatures from Vol. 2
Color scheme: Red with orange and lighter tones
I think it’ll be Jareth, Toby, Sarah, and Mizumi. As for the color scheme I think maybe light blue and gold. What would be bad is if I got it considering my name IS Sarah. Jareth being vindictive :-p JK
I think Toby will be there along with Sir Didymus and Ludo. For an overriding colour I’m thinking Red. Red for the main and gold trim.
I’d guess Jareth, Sarah & Toby since they’re the most important characters. For color, well, so far we’ve had red/ochre and blue/green, so I’m guessing a beige/gold color scheme for #3.
Jareth, Sarah and Moppet.
Blue.
A red or burgandy is definately my guess as the primary color scheme. And as for who will be on the cover, Sarah, Jareth, and Moppet. But Toby has also been in the other 2, so I think he’ll be included as well.
Hmm….I think that it will be Jareth and Sarah AND Toby and Moppet. Sort of shadowing one another, Toby-Jareth and Sarah-Moppet. To show that they resemble one another. The colors are so hard to decide upon….hmmm…I think it will be black and white, or sepia toned.
Hmm, don’t know how a proper (read plain) British name such as mine would fit into the wonderful world of gobblins, but I suppose I’ll have a go:
Moppet will be featured prominently, with Jareth less so. For colors, I’m thinkin green.
Oh gee I really haven’t the foggiest …
I think that Mizumi, Jareth, Sarah & Toby will be on the front.
I think Toby and Moppet will be in the foreground larger then the other characters and on opposite sides. With Toby on the left and Moppet on the right. Jareth will then be behind Toby and Sarah behind Moppet to illustrate their similarities. I also think Sarah will be in her Ball room dress from the film. The top right corner will have Mizumi watching over them all.
I’m not sure on the colours. I’m thinking maybe a white and black colour scheme with a hint of other colours to show that everything isnt just black and white in the world maybe? I’m not sure. Either way I can’t wait to see what the cover looks like.
i think Toby, Moppet, and Sarah for the cover, green and white for the colors
Ack, the suspense is killing me!
Me too!
Soon, soon. I’ll send my editor a note to see about posting it tomorrow. In the meantime, everyone’s still welcome to send in entries until end of day today!
Hey Jake, I have a question for you.
I don’t know if this has ever been answered… But how in the world did you get Kouyu Shurei to do the cover art? Her work is gorgeous and she seems to out-do herself each time a cover is revealed.
What has been your favourite cover so far?
Andi,
Tokyopop, who publishes RtL, also published Shurei’s original series Alichino. At one point, the company was talking to her about finishing that series, which never got completed in Japan. At some point, they found out that she’s a big fan of Labyrinth, so when the opportunity to do the covers came up, she was super-excited.
As for my favorite cover, I love how the first cover echoes the colors and elements of the movie poster, but I’m kind of partial to the colors of volume 2.
-Jake
Ambrose Bierce, Stinger Bell, and Jareth cosplaying as Klaus Kinski.
I guess now is as good a time as any to say thank you for keeping the spirit of Labyrinth alive. The first two volumes of RTL have been completely original and unexpected, with several scenes that made me actually laugh aloud. I can’t wait for the next installment.
It may be too late to enter, but I’ll still put in my two cents:
The two Lizard dudes, Toby, and Jareth… Hana and Stank, too (they’re small, they’ll fit) as the cover cast and deep cool colors like greens and purples for the scheme…
Anyway, thanks again. I’ll have my eyes glued to the screen tomorrow, in happy anticipation.
Hey Jake, I have a question as well.
I saw in an earlier post about that book about Labyrinth tales that includes some stories about Jareth. Do we have any updates on when that’s going to be released yet? Or has it been released and I just missed it?
Sarah, Moppet, and Skub on the cover, with a yellow/green color scheme
Jake, thank you for answering my question.
I like how you answer fan questions. This is really pleases me because it shows that you really care.
Sappy, yeah, but it’s awesome. Please keep it up!
Dude, when are you going to post the cover? I know who’s on it and I saw the pencil sketch, but I’m dying to see the final cover!
Man, it stinks being out the loop when once you were right in the center.
Hi Tim!! It’s so nice to hear from you again!
Tim,
If you were still there, I’m sure I could post it, or at least a link to your blog. Apologies to all — still waiting for the greenlight to post the cover.
-Jake
Aw, Jake, it’s okay! Honestly.
Don’t worry about it. I’m sure it looks amazing, and we’ll love it anyway!
(Or at least I will…)
You’re doing your best. It’s all good.
Toby, Sarah and Jareth
Me: Well, jareth is here with me. He wants to write a comment.
Jareth:Sigh. You all know that I will be on the cover of course. I certainly think that Sarah and my heir, Toby should also be there. Hmmm… And Sarah should be dressed in something… to show more skin.
And thank you Chris and Jake for not making look nearly as evil, shall we say?
Me: The whole comprimising clothing thing Jareth? Gross. Sorry guys.
I fink I should be on the cover wick kings Jareth n’ Toby. Oi yes! and o’ pot o’ Grossiwart stew thar too.
Thanks yeh for lettin’ a goblin loik me comment on this imporint mattar.

[...] Indeed there was! Reader “Sarah” won the contest by providing the best guess for what the volume 3 cover would look like. I contacted her and we came up with a name for a goblin that will appear in volume 4. How much of your day-to-day wardrobe is Labyrinth-inspired, or otherwise Bowie-fied? [...]
