I’ll be back soon with new posts and I’ll see what I can find out about the status of Vol. 3. In the meantime, I find that this video gets me through the day:

Hey Maggie – can you explain the fey thing to me? Are you talking about the Celtic thing where you can describe a person as ‘fey’ loosely translated as meaning ‘knowing’? Cause if you are I don’t understand. Why would that make his eyes funny? I get described as that all the time but I don’t think that’s what you mean. I’m guessing it means something else too. Please explain
Hx
I’m not Maggie, but maybe I can help?
Traditionally, people with mismatched eyes were considered “fey”, in touch with things beyond this world. Hence the definition “knowing”. “Fey” is a general term applied to the supernatural along the lines of faires, elves, goblins, etc., and often people with mismatched eyes were thought to be changlings or witches, because it is so rare that it was assumed to be magical. And considering elves are considered wise beyond the measure of man, fey was a very apt term.
Nowadays, though, most people use “fey” as a way of implying connections to fairies or elves and it has become a much less specif term than it used to.
:-/
lost me there.
Fey= wise or Fey= fairy
And in the Middle Ages: Fey= BURN THEM AT THE STAKE!!!!
I hope that’s clear enough for everyone.
got-ya!!!
thanks!!!!!
Labyrinth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Delay?
You took the words right out of my mouth Gobblin. I believe he’s a half-breed because we can rule out of long line of monarchies, seeing the Labyrinth wasn’t around until Jareth made it. Does that mean that the goblins weren’t around until the Labyrinth was formed, or did Jareth rule them beforehand? I suppose the castle and the Goblin City were around before the Labyrinth.
Also, I would think Jareth discovered Sarah at some point when peering into the human world, feeling some kind of connection to it. That might be the reason Jareth created the Labyrinth in the first place. He realized he wasn’t one of the all powerful beings like Mizumi and other creatures of the Labyrinth. He was different from all of them somehow, so he locked himself up to find himself possibly?
That puts into question what exactly the Underground is: some sort of Limbo, a place for outsiders of the human world, a place created by Jareth himself, a place kind of like Narnia which is one of many dimensions as found in the “Magician’s Nephew”. I believe it to be the latter of the four.
Helen, if you want to see the word “fey” used in another context, read “Wicked Lovely”. That involves a secret world of fey, though different from our definition. Their powers seem similar to Jareth’s and Mizumi’s to a certain extent, but these beings are much more brutal, violent, blood-thirsty creatures (not vampires, thank goodness).
And when we refer to Jareth’s odd eyes, we’re talking about the movie (in the manga it is not all that apparent). In the movie, Jareth’s right eye is always somewhat dialated, while his left is always contracted close to the center. Most people don’t notice this because of the big screen they watch it on. I watched the movie on my PSP and noticed it after watching it a couple of times. I sometimes wonder if that is how David Bowie’s eyes really are, or if he wore some type of contacts, or if they edited his eyes in the final cut.
Correction: David Bowie’s eyes are like that. I just read that he has some disorder. Click the link to see more. I don’t feel like copy-and-pasting all that down.
And his eyes are two different colors.
No, did you not read the link? His unequal pupils only give the appearence of two different colors, but they are not different colors. I can’t believe he got into a fight over a girl… hehehe
Thanks that makes heaps more sense now.
No, I didn’t read the link, but… David Bowie got into a fight over a girl? Now I must read it!
cool!
now I must go and see in the movie for myself.
no cat in yarn!!!!!!!!
After taking about ten minutes before bed to read volume two, I realized something.
Follow along with Jareth, take his point of view, or as Scout would say “crawl into his skin and walk around in it”. Read what Mizumi says about Jareth creating the Labyrinth. If you were Jareth, why would you do that? I asked myself this last night and realized that what I said before about being different is exactly why I would create the Labyrinth. Now take another look through Jareth’s eyes. Say you fell in love with someone. This person was very beautiful and energetic and creative. You believe she loved you back, so you did everything she asked of you. She was dissatisfied with everything even though she asked for it. Then you offer her the world and your servitude in exchange for her love, but she refuses you and casts you into the dirt as if you were a worm. You believe you were mistaken in your attempts to make her yours. Would you gamble your entire kingdom for a new chance at love? Would you risk what you no longer have within your grasp to chase after something even farther from your reach? Or do you use that unacquitted love to your advantage to get back what was stolen from you? Would you forget about her and everything she meant to you?
…
Suddenly Jareth seems scarier… I seriously don’t know for certain what he would choose, but really, I could see him doing either of those things. But I think–think, mind you–that he is trying to get Sarah back somehow. The scene in the palanquin is my main source for hope for that theory.
My main source of evidence that he’s trying to get Sarah back is when he wakes up from his nightmare in chapter one of volume 2 and has a temper tantrum, then mutters to himself, “Sarah, what do you want from me?” When I first read that, my heart went into a flutter. And the fact that he says that, and the fact that Mizumi knows about Jareth’s downfall confirms that Jareth does love Sarah (just pointing out to those who might believe he doesn’t). When, where, or how he fell in love with her is still in question.
Jake, will they be mentioning Jareth’s ties with Sarah along with his origins in the “Tales of the Labyrinth” Anthology thing coming out? Also, if it’s not too late, I think a cool new name for it should be “A Goblin’s Labyrinth” or “A Goblin Dynasty in the Underground” or “The Owl’s Perch in the Labyrinth” (Just a few random ideas).
I new that he was still in love with her the 1st time that I read it
6 weaks ago
Well, from the movie, I didn’t know he was in love with her until I watched it around 12- 13 yrs. old. (I was quite naive then, believe it or not)
Plus, there are some that believe Jareth just wanted to seduce Sarah. I just wrote what I did to prove that that was not the case. He just felt very lonely, unloved, which was reflected in his treatment towards his goblins. It makes me wonder how his parents treated him, or if he even remembers them.
What was that for?
^_^
Okay, since everyones doing smilies for no apparent reason… }:) 0:)

:t is supposed to be a vampire smiley because i saw one but i’m only guessing what it is typed.
Jareth is a very tragic person. You can tell that he really dislikes being king of the goblins, but really doesn’t have any choice. Conisdering goblins are ugly, rude, noisy, stupid, and completely dependent on him, is it any wonder that he desired to rule something fair, eloquent, graceful, intelligent, and fiercely independent?
You can’t rule something that’s fiercely independent. And don’t even think about contradicting me with the “Bella & Edward” issue cause I have a counter-attack for that one.
:T :I
:} :>
Sarah is anything but fair. She is elegant at times, I will admit. Graceful? Let’s see, sprinting in the rain, falling down a cavern of animated hands, getting high off an enchanted peach (no offense Sarah). Intelligence? Had she stayed and listened to the worm explain himself, she could have avoided all that trouble and arrived 12 hours earlier at least. “A piece of cake”? That is one of the most stupid things she did in the entire movie other than wishing Toby away in the first place. I’ll admit the lipstick thing was pretty ingenious, but the fact that the Labyrinth is not fair kinda put a damper on that plan. “I know, why don’t I just eat this entire peach instead of sharing it with my new friends? I need it more!” Though it makes me wonder what might have happened if she had shared that peach. Would they have all dreamt of Jareth? *shudder*
