Frequent commenter and talented artist Aiijuin has had her work featured here before, but this time she’s really outdone herself with a new video that picks up the story of Return to Labyrinth right where volume 2 leaves off. How closely does her take adhere to the actual volume 3? Well, you’ll have to wait a month or two more for that, but regardless, her story stands on its own very well, with great bits of humor and most significantly, a reunion of Sarah and Jareth that I’m sure many of you will enjoy. Thanks, Aiijuin!

Wow, that’s really good. I’ve been working on comics for Labyrinth myself, but gosh I feel like a schoolgirl compared to that…
~.~
Thank you again, Jake! I really appreciate the blog. This is still as much an honor as the last time you blogged my video!
You’re story, “Return to Labyrinth” is truly a marvel. I “plug” it whenever I can, to whomever will listen (even at the NYC ComicCon 2009 this year, I kept mentioning how great it was to many of the artist/writers tables. I even ran into the “Dark Crystal” author, Barbara Randall Kesel there and talked about your ‘RTL’ manga.
(No, don’t worry, I’m not Dolores Claiborne from Stephen King or a stalker or anything… I’m just an avid appreciator of your works.)
“Return to Labyrinth” has inspired me to draw (doujinshi), write (rather poorly, I’m not a writer), and make YouTube videos (…before that I never really considered the “Labyrinth”, sad to say, but I have loved Jim Henson & the Muppet Show for many, many years.)
Thank you for your awesome story!
(I must say, “The cliffhanger at the end of Volume 2″ was your finest moment! Do you realize how many “hooked” people you have now?)
(I guess I’ll be going through ‘RTL’ withdraw when it’s finally over.) I don’t think my comic is close to your story, but I like to guess. (I just draw it to entertain my children on the schoolbus in the morning, they’re highly anticipating Volume 3, also).
I can’t wait for May 2009! I think I’m starting to dream in magic crystal vision.
*Hai, Nihongo mo hanashite ikemas! Ja Matta Ne, Forbes Sensei! Soshite, Jake-san no Manga, ga daisuki da na! Waii! (fufufufu!) Isogi gogatsu 2009!*
Man, I gotta hand it to people that can create their own comics/manga…I can come up with storylines and characters, and I can draw (Fairly well if I don’t say so myself)…
But to actually sit down and plan out a comic, do all the drawing, all the inking, the shading/colouring, lettering, etc….That takes way more focus and dedication than I can muster.
I get too distracted by my own ideas to ever be able to finish an entire comic by myself…I’m definantly more of an idea person (I really hope to do concept art/character design one day).
So congrats to Aiijuin! And thanks for giving us a taste of Labyrinth whilst we wait for the next volume to come out!
Wow Aiijuin, that was great work you have done. I greatly enjoy it! Keep up the good work and hope to see more clips!
Aiijuin, I just checked out your deviant art page — didn’t realize you were also doing those pages in color! They look great. I like the color palette you use. Ganbatte!

Was that one of the singers from Celtic Woman? If so – excellent! My god, my heart was beating so fast watching that and reading what was going on.
Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT.
Thanks for showing it to us Jake, and thank you – Aiijuin – for drawing such a wonderful ending. That seems almost like an ending to the fourth book, not a re-collection from the second. Don’t you think?
THAT was beautiful but… what if I end up liking her ending more than yours?
Mandy: I’m confident that Jake’s ending is going to be much, MUCH, better than mine. (To be honest, I’m making this up as I go along… so, I really don’t have an ending…The people on DevArt keep saying: “Yeah, get to the ending!” They don’t realize I haven’t a clue what the ending is going to be either (it depends on my mood), so I’ll be just as surprised as they are when I begin to draw the final pages…)
On a side note: I originally ended my comic at the end of the “Famous Line”, but I had so many complaints to finish it, that it, suddenly, became a continuing doujinshi (this is against what I had originally planned…. I was always taught to “Leave ‘em wanting more.)
Yes! It was Celtic Woman in the soundtrack, the song actually inspired this comic scene… I played the scene out in my head with this song until I could finally draw it. (I have to use music to draw my stories, because I’m really, really, not a strong writer (grammatically, too!)) Then, I had to “time” it correctly in the YouTube video, in order to get the beats to sequence with the steps & what-not. (Window Media Player is a little difficult to time correctly…How do those YouTube vid makers do it?)
Jake: Iyada yo! Dou Itashimashitte!
I’m glad you enjoyed the colored pages on deviantART! Thank you for visiting! It was a great honor!
[I'm just trying to hone skills with my new toy: The Wacom Intuos Graphic Tablet. (I was actually afraid to use it at first, LOL) I'm attempting to learn the "Ins" & "Outs" of the Adobe Photoshop (layering) programs too.... ]
Thank you, again!
Dang… I wish I could draw like that. That was amazing.
I REALLY want volume 3 out right now. All this teaser stuff is driving me insane.
I thought that song was chosen to go with the scene/video. It was lovely.
Jake, there better be a fight between Mizumi and Sarah. I want that to happen so bad. I want Mizumi to call Sarah out, I want a cat fight!
I was glad to see that Eskier was in this! I love his character. I want more of him, too, Jake!
Mizumi vs Sarah? Now, that’s a fight that no one want to miss!
Is it wicked of me to want Sarah to loose if it comes down to a catfight? Mizumi is the villianess and I think it’d kinda make me loose respect for her if she lost something that mundane. Unless, we’re talking, like, fireballs and mystical deathrays type of catfight. Hand-to-hand fighting? Sarah should lose and then Jareth would save her. And then they’d kiss and live happily ever after! *squee!*
Does anyone else find it ironic that “keep dreaming” is an insult? People tend to say that a lot when I wander off into fangirl fantasies.
wow!! I watched it like 20 times! Aiijuin, you are really talented!! I love how you captured Sarah so well!! Thank you so much for your hard work.
Ah, very well done! Teehee! Sarah rox.
Anyway, loved the music! I think it fits the situation well, yup, yup! Sure does!
I wish I could draw like that. All I was able to do was just make composites for my vid. I do like that scene, though. My fic-verse takes place mostly well after RTL. I’m kinda hoping Mizumi (and her daughters) barely squeak out of this one in shame and exile … I don’t want any of them to die (for starters, because that would just RUIN my continuity LOL). I am positively jumping up and down for vol 3. It’s KILLING me!
Still, I’m all for the Mizumi-Sarah catfight.
Goblinn, I was thinking maybe Mizumi would feebly try to overcome Sarah with magic, but Sarah would somehow gain great strength in will and magic. Mizumi would be so defenseless that she does something cheatful a underhanded, pulling a knife on her, then Jareth would swoop in and save her. Then Mizumi would be crushed by the realization that she had lost, and Jareth would be wounded by the knife. Sarah would be so grateful that she would realized that she loved him and they would live happily ever after.
It’s only a dream right now (that I hope to draw soon, when I don’t have school to worry about. T_T)
*poketh Jake*
JAKE. MAKE A CATFIGHT!
I like that, Maggie. It keeps everyone very much in character and makes for a good ending!
But the third volume hasn’t even come out yet, and we’re already trying to predict the ending! xD We’re still only half-way there…
I have the flu, so pardon me if this gets random.
Mizumi pull a knife? Poison, I can see. (Ooh, maybe a poison apple!) Sending Escher to stab Sarah, I can see. She seems more like the sort of person to gouge people’s eyes out with her fingernails. Anytime you attack someone with a knife, you run the risk of getting your weapon turned against you. The thing is, Mizumi seems like the sort of person who abhors personal violence. She’d have to be really, really angry to attack someone physically when she could just blast them with watery death rays.
But then again, I might be wrong, because we’ve never seen Mizumi get really angry. She’s been sarcastic and malicious, but that’s just the entire “I was dumped by the love of my life” thing talking. I think she’s permanently stuck in the anger stage of getting over someone because it feels good and magic is powered by emotion so it gives her more power.
However, that’s just a theory. Too bad I can’t get it to involve bunnies.
@Gobblinize me: Mizumi is really an evil bunny rabbit, and after she is defeated Jareth turns her back to her normal form, and then hands her over to a large, grimey goblin who will “Hug her, and pet her, and squeeze her, and call her George” and make Bunny-Mizumi miserable as punishment for her wrongdoings.
Bunnies added, problem solved…Unless of course, bunny is really slang for something. I hope it isn’t though, because that means I’m already out of touch with the young crowd at age 19.
In all seriousness though, I agree with you that Mizumi probably wouldn’t personally attack Sarah. I don’t think she’d be totally against it though, she just probably prefers to distance herself from attacks.
Explanation for random bunny references…
Explanation? Well, you said “However, that’s just a theory. Too bad I can’t get it to involve bunnies”, So I added Bunnies.
So in other words, it was a feeble attempt to be funny that fell flat apparently…
So thank god this is the internet, because then I don’t have to face the awkward silence that would’ve followed my attempt to be funny, had we been talking in real life. Instead I can just skip to eating chocolate to replenish my self-esteem. Yay chocolate!
it’s great work! I think that they may bring sarah back to the labyrinth to help toby. How they are going to do that will be interesting to see. Return to Labyrinth volume 3 cannot come fast enough! Sarah has always been my favorite character!
Well, I’m afraid that if Sarah returns to the Labyrinth, she’ll steal the spotlight from Toby.
You have a point there but still I am really looking foward to seeing how she plays a part in the story. I would love to see her reaction to moppet if that is possible.
Great job, Aijun, this was really fantastic!
The music is great too, I tend to have a weak spot for the Celtic stuff. Ok, I’m out before the teachers find out I’m not doing school work <_<;
I just want to say something. Sarah is my favorite because she has
always struck me as a strong character who will do the right thing no matter what she has to go through to do it. I am a jareth/Sarah
fan but the fact that she turned him down and defeated him proved that she is a strong woman and whether or not you like her or her actions you respect her for her inner strength. That is probably what made jareth love her in the first place. Anyway this is just something I had to put down. I really do connect with Sarah and hope the return to labyrinth manga does her and her story the justice it deserves. That’s all. Sorry for intruding.
Amanda, I agree with you on the Sarah’s strength, but remember this sequel started with Toby, should it not end with Toby?
I really do like this, it would be quite the Jareth/Sarah fans’ way to end the series, and I am most sincerely a Jareth/Sarah fan!!!
My on;y problem was that I couldn’t read the pages after the credits. Can anyone offer subtitles?
I would like to add something about the ending with Toby. Yes the books are more about Toby. I think it will end with Jareth giving Toby the kingdom ( making him the next Jareth and he will be a better ruler than Jareth ) , his power and everything and leave the Labyrinth and the gobblin world. He and Sara will get married, move to New York city and he will sing at nightclubs at night and Sara will teach school and they will live happily ever after in our world !! Well ..at least that would be a fun ending!
Meh, for some reason, I don’t like the idea of Jareth leaving the Labyrinth. I think Sarah should come and live with him instead, since she never really seemed to fit in our world anyway. In the movie, she seemed really at home in the Underground (at least in my eyes), and while she grew up in the end, she still didn’t seem to fit in this world. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong, but I just can’t see Jareth perminately in our world, either. It just doesn’t suit them.
As far as Toby’s ending goes, I do believe that it should not be overshadowed by Sarah and Jareth’s happiness. He is the main character in the manga, after all. But I don’t believe he should stay in the Underground… Like Sarah in the movie, he’s too young to take on the responsibility of dropping everything in his home world and moving to the Labyrinth. He doesn’t really have any true ties to the Labyrinth (except maybe the King thing, but that might be void if he truly is just a figurehead in Jareth’s plan), and so he shouldn’t stay. Then again, there are still two more volumes to go, so a lot could happen to change my opinion.
Well, that’s my two cents for the day… I’d better head off and get to bed. Night all!
Maybe Jareth and Sarah could have a joint relationship. For a certain amount of time, Sarah will stay in the Labyrinth with Jareth, then after a while, Jareth will come to the human world with Sarah. They’ll just trade on and off.
Also, this is really random, I was thinking maybe we could have a RTL Calender? You know, wake up to a new day with some of our favorite characters hanging on our wall. It sounds really stupid , I know, but it’s just an idea…
Loved the whole thing Aijun- goosebumps! Great song- i know what you mean about writing/drawing to music, it’s so inspiring. Beautiful artwork too. I’m sure with the excellent plot so far, whatever ending we get is going to be brilliant – goosebumps for vol 2 as well btw! I absolutely love the cover art on both of the volumes. WELL DONE. I just watched the movie and then re-read them. Very fluid, I enjoyed that and have since got my husband into it as well.
Oh and I agree about the RTL calender and that Jareth should stay in the Labyrinth
Beautiful video….. ^_^
I’m a bit new to the board and, admittedly, can’t even find if there is a proper message board here so I ask the forgiveness of the veterans if I simply leave my initial commentary here.
Firstly, I have absolutely no problem with the author taking his time. I’m eager for the ending but as I’ve waited 20 years for these to come out, a little longer so he can work out plot points is better than being disappointed. Regarding the prior 3 volumes, I like an author who understands that there are people who have kept it going, but has also offered just the right amount of in-jokes and fan-service to them along with an exceptional story.
I’ve immensely enjoyed all of it and anticipate a fantastic ending. And, as an aspiring author, I totally understand that’s a tall order – but I send my best wishes to him in that endeavor.
