Returning to Labyrinth since 2007!

Toby Cosplay

Last year, world-class cosplayer K-chan created an absolutely amazing costume modeled on Kouyu Shurei’s drawing of  Toby. I’ve been to quite a few conventions with a major cosplay presence over the years, but even if this wasn’t a series so close to my heart, I would be seriously impressed. Gorgeous work! She gave me permission to repost the photos here — I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

This my Toby costume from the second cover of the “Return to the labyrinth” manga series  based on the artwork by Kouyu Shurei which i made for the 2008 Swancon ball.

As there is half of the costume covered up on the cover, i created a design based upon the Goblin Kings (Jareths ) clothings as a reference, but i wanted to give Toby a ‘human realm” feel to his clothes, as he has yet to fully become the new goblin King and is still having issues within himself.

The tunic – It was made from a combination of molskin and curtain material for the detailing on the inside. (You can’t see it, but the material patteron on the front collar goes all the way on the inside)

The middle belt – Is made of a leather and was created from using the base from an older belt and modified with details.

For reference, here’s the original cover for volume 2.

If anyone else has costumes, drawings, videos or other creative efforts inspired by Return to Labyrinth that you’d like to share, please email me at jake [at] gobblin [dot] net.

I’ve been wanting to do a Jareth cosplay for a long time now, but I have no real sewing skills (Or a sewing machine for that matter) so my costumes consist primarily of things I find at Value Village or Halloween shops. I have the perfect set of knee high boots just begging to be incorporated into Jareth costume, but I’ve yet to find anything else that’ll work as part of his outfit.

That said, I think some of the best Labyrinth costumes are the ones where people take a little liberty with the design, like K-chan, and come up with something more original than trying to get the most movie-accurate representation.

By the way, has anyone found any good Male cosplayers of Jareth? I’m sure Jareth would be pleased that so many ladies want to dress up like him, but I’ve yet to find a really awesome Jareth done by a guy (Maybe they’re afraid to be compared to Jareth’s…*Ahem*).
