Volume 4 Art Preview: Pixie Power!

Here we have the second piece of preview art for Return to Labyrinth Volume 4 (third if you count the one I sneaked onto the flickr stream). It’s another thumbnail — the first rough sketch that Chris does to layout the page and block out dialog balloons. As you can see, if features Hana, Stank and… well, it won’t be a big black box in the final volume.

Awesome! :D But… What’s with the big black box? Are you trying to hide something from us, Jake? O_O

And I have not heard of this flickr stream preview as I do not have a flickr account… But it certainly does sound promising…

I’ll bet three bucks it’s Moulin, judging from their expressions. Granted, Hana usually looks like that, but it’d take something big-like being the daughter of an evil queen-to make Stank mad. So, three bucks that it’s Moulin. Any takers?

…Yeah, I’m just a little fixated on what’ll happen to Moulin, poor kid.

    • Samantha says:

I don’t know Stank’s expression seems more like a “alright let’s do this!” than being mad. I’d guess there coming up with a plan.

  3. Mollie says:

It’s the Cat in the Hat behind the box! So he did get his cameo after all, bless him.

  4. Kelly says:

I like how Mini-Ludo (That’s what I call him :D ) looks all serious while staring at “the box”.

well, in the bottom panel, it looks like the edge of a dress to the right of Hana, so does that mean it’s a girl. Could it be Moppet, of maybe Sarah has finally entered the Labyrinthine stage…?

    • Kristi O. says:

Maybe Hana and Stank set out to find Moppet/bring her back to the castle for the final confrontation?

I can’t remember what Sarah was wearing in the last volume…Next time I go home I’m gonna have to bring my volumes with me back to University…but was she wearing a dress/ wide legged pants?

      • Maggie says:

        she was wearing pants.

        • Kristi O. says:

Okay, so unless Sarah went through a costume change it’s probably not her. And now that I think about it, I think Moppet changed out of her dress before leaving, so I don’t think it’s her (Like I said, I don’t have my manga handy so I’m a little fuzzy on what happened).

          Maybe it’s Moulin?

  7. Sierra says:

Sarah has to go to the labyrinth!! I can’t imagine how this story will wrap up sufficiently if she doesn’t…
Then again, who knows. I’m sure Jake has some good stuff in store for us. :)

  8. Another Kelly says:

If the thing at the bottom is a dress, then Hana and Stank are on the floor. The question then becomes who can fit in the black box if they’re on the floor. However, if Hana and Stank are on a table, then it doesn’t really matter about the size of the hidden character, but then why does it look like a dress at the bottom? It still shows that they are on the same level as the character’s feet (or knees, I guess). Hana and Stank just aren’t that big.

    • Kristi O. says:

I think Hana and Stank are on the ground because then the last panel wouldn’t make a lot of sense. Maybe it’s because I draw, but to me the object in the last panel reads really plainly as dress drawn very quickly (The folds in the fabric, the general shape…)

In any case, it’s hard to judge the size of something without having something to compare it to. We can compare the size of Hana and Stank to one another, but without knowing for sure how big the other character is, we can’t really make the assumption that they’re in/out of scale.

That being said, it is a rough sketch, so the exact size relations of characters may be a little off, as the focus is likely just to block out the scene and layout of the page.

Jake, does this speculation amuse you?
