Right now Return to Labyrinth artist Chris Lie is hard at work on Chapter 2 of volume 4. He was kind enough to share this sketch of one of that chapter’s featured characters as you’ve never seen him before! Yeah, I know that just yesterday I wrote about how timeless Jareth is, but even immortals go through fresh young phases, right? More on that later. For now, just enjoy this lovely portrait!

Looks awesome, I think I can see a bit of a resemblance to how Jareth looked on the cover to Volume 1. The hair is nicely done too, I think one of the hardest parts about drawing Jareth is trying to get his hair to look natural.
Approximately what age was Chris going for? Or is that a secret to be found in the last volume?
How old? Approximately Immortal minus a millennium. : P
Heh, “Ask a stupid question…”
I forgot to add too, I love the eyebrows. I hate when people just draw uber thin eyebrows for everyone (Or god forbid, they just draw a line). It’s nice to see a brow with a bit of personality.
Though I can’t help but wonder, if were making it official that Jareth can “age”, then does that mean that in a couple million more milleniums that we’d be treated to Old Man Jareth? Where Jareth spends most of his days falling asleep on his throne, drinking prune juice, and yelling at those pesky chickens to get off his lawn.
I don’t know… ancient mystical creatures can go downhill pretty fast. When 900 years old he was, Yoda was pretty decrepit, but at 880 years, he was mighty spry, doing crazy flips and shooting lightning.
Seriously though, re: Jareth, with immortals, I think aging is a subjective affair. He’d only get old if he feels like it’s his time. That’s not the official Henson line — just my take on the matter.
Wow! That looks amazing. It makes me wonder if Sarah would have found him more appealing at that age (appearence-wise age, not actual age.) But it really captures him.
I really like his eye markings, and the hair. It looks softer, yet still wild. I’m a fan.
He looks amazing! judging by this image, he appears to be in his early 20’s, because he look way too young to be in his 30’s.
*fangirl scream*
LOVE IT! That mischevious come-hither, but… I-know-something-you-don’t look in his eyes is daring and spunky and fiesty. Captures his playful and wild side. And that just rolled out of bed, but still amazing hair…gorgeous!

Woo woo. ^_~
Though, when I first saw that I thought, “Aladdin?” XD
He has that look on his face that says “I am mischievous and will set your hair on fire if you mess with me”
I’m pretty sure Jareth’s pretty happy always looking thirty-nine-years-old and resembling a hot glam rocker.
This is a very nice drawing. I saw a similar one back in 1999 by a Labyrinth fan named Lyris. Hers was done on windows paint but in such a way that it looked like actual oil paints and it was really very beautiful. I wish I still had it.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
He looks like Toby’s age

Omigosh!!! Volume 4 just keeps getting better and better!!!
YEE!!
AMazingness.
Hey Mandy, this is very off topic but I thought you might find it interesting. I remember you mentioning before how Pika-la-Cynique sorta chewed you out over mentioning RtL, well she just made this comment on her recent journal:
“Return to Labyrinth manga : I should like to mollify some earlier, pretty vicious comments I made about it. I’ve not read it properly, only leafed through the first volume and seen a few scans of 2 and 3. It’s not fair (…ha) to judge a story before it has had a chance to play out, and while I guess as a fangirl I’m still a bit disappointed, as an amateur writer, and comic artist, I have to cut those guys some slack. Writing original stories is a lot tougher than messing about doing funnies with pre-created and already-loved characters”
She still seems to dislike RtL a lot, but atleast she’s starting to realise the trouble Jake and Chris have to go to to make the fans happy. Interesting though that she admits that she hasn’t actually read through the manga, makes me wonder what she’s basing her judgement on. I guess this harkens back to Jake’s posts about the difficulties of writing the Labyrinth characters, it’s hard to please everyone yet stay true to your own artistic vision.
My guess is she’s listening to the very vocal few who hate the manga and planned to hate it before they ever actually read it.
maybe by Halloween will know the shipping date
not shipping as in stores
but to&from factories
I really like the the sketch, it is very good. Thanks for posting these bits, it helps with the waiting for RTL #4. But why a flashback to a young Jareth? Things that make you go Humm.
He looks like an adorable little munchkin.
Okay, maybe debonair would be a better adjective. Though compared to his older self, he does look very fresh. He looks slightly snobby as well. which is how he should look.
Thanks for sharing, it’s a great drawing – the lines are beautiful. Chris’s illustrations have come along in leaps and bounds over the last few volumes.
I just wish it were in color- perhaps with make-up the likes of the ball scene. I always did like the outrageous eye shadow and coral lip gloss associated with Jareth’s “come-hither” looks
SQUEEEEEEEE!
You did not see me do that.
