Returning to Labyrinth since 2007!

From the Archives: Moppet and… Flakwort?

Today’s character concept artwork features a very early take on Moppet, back when she was envisioned as a more youthful incarnation of Sarah’s dreams. I really do love this sketch — it fits moppet’s name and personality perfectly.

As for the other character, Flakwort, he’s a goblin character who ended up on the chopping block. Originally, he was going to be goblin warrior, exiled to the wasteland outside the Labyrinth, who our characters would have met in a very different volume 2. His name ended up getting recycled with a slight change as “Flegwort,” the goblin shoemaker, the idea of a shamed warrior took a very different form in Skub’s back story, and a goblin-in-exile did appear in volume 3, so I guess in a way his spirit lives on. Had Flakwort survived in tact, he would have rescued Moppet from this yet-unvisited wasteland, and she, in turn, would have helped him to regain his honor. But that was a very different story, that perhaps will be told another time…

    Very interesting! Very cool.

Who’s the scary shadow-man behind Flakwort?

I believe the shadow is supposed to be Flakwort, as seen by Moppet in the wasteland. His first appearance was supposed to be scary and mysterious. Or it could just be a cool sketch from Chris. :P

Waaa, Moppet is so cute! She would totally own the Loli-cons <3

I have to admit, I do really like this version of Moppets mask, though it’s obvious why it couldn’t be used. Eyes may be expressive, but it’s much easier to express emotion when the entire face is visible (Especially on the printed page).

That, and all Moppet’s lines would seem rather disembodied if we couldn’t see her mouth. Still, i think this mask makes Moppet look more like a goblin, which is what she was really aiming for with her ‘disguise’.

Love the concept art and scrapped ideas!!! It’s always so interesting to see how these things evolve!

Wow, Moppet is so adorable! She also looks kinda fierce in a way. Flakwort looks so much like a sketch we might find in “Goblins of Labyrinth”! Very good styling. ^_^
