New Alice in Wonderland Trailer

There’s a new trailer out for Alice in Wonderland that finally hints at the direction the story is taking (previous trailers have shown characters from AiW and Through the Looking Glass as seen through Burton’s lens, but mostly out of context). It’s hard to tell if the movie’s a liberal retelling of Looking Glass, or a wholly original story, but this trailer makes it clear that the Queen of Hearts is the “Red Queen” and that Alice has been to Wonderland before. (Note — if you know more about the script, don’t spoil it in the comments, please!) Certainly there’s more action here than in any previous Alice retelling. Having Alice be the champion who has to save Wonderland seems a little odd, as the denizens of Lewis Carrol’s world seemed to universally live by nonsense rules rather than any sense of good and evil, but I don’t want to judge before seeing the movie. In any case, the visuals and the casting are fantastic and I’m terribly excited to see the movie next March. Between this, Clash of the Titans, Black Death, How to Train Your Dragon, Season of the Witch and The Lightning Thief, the first quarter of 2010 is going to be quite the season for fantasy!

    Clearly I need to reread the stories. I didn’t think the Hatter was a very important character. ^^;

Hee, hee. Oh, he’s not. But, Johnn Depp casting aside, it makes sense to expand on a few characters as aside from the queens, pretty much everyone Alice encounters comes and goes quickly. It’s like Labyrinth if Hoggle, Didymus and Ludo didn’t come along for the journey.

Has anyone seen the Syfy channel’s retelling of Alice? If you haven’t then you need to watch it because it’s really good. I would suggest it to any Alice fan. Happy watching! ^_^ (You can find it on youtube).

I saw Syfy’s version of Alice. It was very good. And the version of the mad hatter was oddly cute.

      • KatelynnLynn says:

        Yes. Yes he was.

Hatter’s always been my fave character, and casting Johnny Depp as the Hatter just made my day ^_^ This and Sherlock Holmes are my big anticipated movies.

          Personally I can’t wait for Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Jim Butcher, author of The Dresden Files, left a comment on Scifi Wire’s article about the film pretty much saying if the film’s successful it will draw positive attention to the paranormal / fantasy genre and to The Dresden Files in particular (with a little inserted smiley face). Yeah, there’s no denying Nic Cage just revived Dresden Files with a few tweaks (name change and city change).

I can’t say much in regard to the plot (because I haven’t seen it yet) but that character in the trailer… that’s Harry Dresden just with a new name in a different city.

Oh, and in the books Harry Dresden does take on a teenaged apprentice too but that’s not until the book Proven Guilty which is book seven or eight (I forget which) of The Dresden Files. The only difference is Dresden’s teenage apprentice is female (and no, before anyone thinks it, not a love interest).

I do want to see Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland but I’m also looking forward to his Dark Shadows in 2011. I love Dark Shadows. And it’s about time vampires have fangs again!

typo = somehow part of the word personally got cut off at the top. I’m not sure how that happened.

  4. Mandy says:

Oh, never mind, the post is just looking weird on my screen. Strange. Sorry about the clutter.

    Yeeeeaahy, wonky Mad Hatter!

  6. EEEEEEEEE! Can’t WAIT for this movie!

“How to train your dragon” is going to be a movie? Heaven help me, my brother is going to bananas when I tell him. He loves those books almost as much as I love Alice.

  7. Maggie says:

Wow. That looks pretty epic. (a lot more epic than the original)
So wait… Alice comes back? hmm, that’s a very interesting take on the story. And the Mad Hatter seems a litttle less…mad, and more skilled with a sword? I’m definitely seeing this in the theater! haha ^_^

  8. Maggie says:

And if they can have Alice coming back to Wonderland, isn’t it just as likely that we might see Sarah come back to the Labyrinth? :D

  9. Kendra says:

I for one am incredibly excited! :D I am a fan of the original Alice in Wonderland, but I’m also a fan of creativly retelling stories or adding on to them as long as it’s well done. And since Tim Burton is a regular genius, I’m sure we have nothing to worry about.

On a slightly different note, this reminds me a lot of The Looking Glass Wars novel. The plot line was similar, but it wasn’t told very well. But like I said, Burton shouldn’t have a problem with making this movie rock the Wonderland World. :D

  10. Mandy says:

There’s something about a big headed Helena Bonham Carter that trips me out.

  11. Kerri says:

Its gunna be epic >.< I love Through the Looking Glass characters..its all so random..as a fan…personally any retelling/ original/ or fanbased story of Alice im not to fussed..as long as its based on Alice In Wonderland! Bring it on!

  12. Mollie says:

I love what they did with Depp, he really does look mad =) His eyes are awesome too; hurray for color contacts! It’s good that they decided to expand on the story instead of following the book like all the previous film adaptations have done. That’s mainly why I liked Syfy’s Alice so much; they kept almost everything from the book except the storyline. It was a pretty epic adaptation, I even managed to get my roommate hooked on it too. Hopefully this will turn out to be as epic as it looks!

  14. Mandy says:

This is going to be a great year for fantasy films.

  15. Queen B says:

It looks to me like this film is based more on The Looking Glass Wars/Seeing Redd by Frank Beddor rather than the books by Lewis Carroll, if you’ve read these versions where Alyss (yes, the spelling is meant to be that way) was the Princess of Wonderland who had to hide in our world and lost her memory the whole trailer makes a lot more sense… God I can’t wait to see this film…. :-D
