It’s a Crystal, Nothing More

At long last, Sarah makes her volume 4 preview debut! And before you ask, “why is she blonde?”, the answer is, she isn’t. This page just hasn’t been toned yet, so her dark hair hasn’t been filled in. Why is Sarah dressed like that? What does she see in the crystal? And where exactly are she and Jareth that fairies would by flitting about? These questions must go unanswered for the time being, but for now, please enjoy this sneak peek.

YES! mah gurd, I’ve been compulsively checking this website for the Sarah update…

Actually, I’ve been lurking here ever since I learned about the Return to Labyrinth, and it’s really nice that there’s this companion comic to the 1986 film. It’s great that it focuses on Toby and adds little background stories to the goblins, and (of course!) that it features Jareth and Sarah. Thank you for expanding the Labyrinth Universe, and to Chris Lie for depicting it on lots and lots of pages!

  2. Lindsey McBratney says:

wellcome Dishwasher, it’s great to meet you! And Jake may I say you and your team have done it again it looks amazing. I can’t wait for return to labyrinth 4 to come out. My friends at school are going mad at me beacuse I keep reading the books when I should be prefecting.

    • Dishwasher says:

Thank you for being so welcoming :) It looks like an interesting community on the blog (with bonus ST:TNG posts), so here I am, unlurked.

It’s so cool that the Internet can make things like this so interactive between the authors, artists and fans.

I’m also eagerly anticipating the last volume and generally wooting Labyrinth, only replace ‘prefecting’ with ‘writing my masters dissertation’.

  3. Megara says:

Jareth & Sarah! Thank you so much!

I just got my Return to Labyrinth vol. 3 the last week, when it was released here in Spain. Now, I can’t wait for vol. 4 (althouth I feel depressed when I think about the waiting time! :S) Anyway, I just wanted to say that I love the Labyrinth Universe since I was 12, now I’m 24, and this thing that you are doing it’s just amazing. Thank you!

    • Jake Forbes says:

Welcome, Megara! Wow, RtL is available in Spain now? It’s not translated to Spanish, is it? I hadn’t heard of any translations, but if they exist, I’d love to get my hands on a copy. Thanks so much for stopping by gobblin.net.

      • Megara says:

Yes, it is translated to spanish! Didn’t you know it? That’s the reason I had to wait almost three years to get my copy! It’s crazy! I’m so glad to meet you and have the opportunity to talk with you. I hope you get a copy of Regreso al Laberinto soon.

  4. Autumn says:

I’m glad you have them named as Sarah and Jareth, because at first I thought it was Moppet and Toby, then I assumed Jareth and Miziumi. Love the picture :)

  5. Excuse me for a second…

:: walks out the room to scream, then calmly walks back ::

Yes. Yes, I needed that. <3

  6. zotlot says:

Yay! Some lovely Jareth-and-Sarah-ness at last!

I absolutely can’t wait for volume 4, the last three have been so brilliant :) .

  7. Darkfox says:

Is that Jareth in the picture? I thought it was Toby. Sorry, I need glasses! :) Keep up the good work!

  8. Maggie says:

Please excuse me while I recover from my faint.
I was so excited to see this, my joy was practically palpable!
I love how Jareth is looking in the crystal. It makes me wonder if maybe those are Sarah’s dreams, and that Jareth hopes to see himself in them as well. He also doesn’t look so cunning in this, but maybe nostalgic (some emotion I can’t find the word for at the moment). And Sarah looks a bit… younger? She definitely looks more like Moppet in this, not just with the hair, but with her youth. The art work is incredible as always and I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished product! ^_^

And I offer my salutations to our newcomers Megara and Dishwasher (Great name by the way! :) )

  9. Ti'ana says:

    *lets out an almighty squee*

Gorgeous artwork — and I am so thrilled to see some Jareth and Sarah stuff :D Looking forward to volume 4 rather rabidly… ;)

  10. Mandy says:

You just make me hungry for more. You and Jim Butcher. You’re both cruel. First he ends the latest Dresden Files novel on a cliff hanger and now you taunt us with this. I’ve come to the conclusion that all male writers are evil. Evil, I tell you! EVIL! … I’m done. :P

I love the picture, by the way.

  11. Mollie says:

I get the feeling this is reminiscent of the ballroom scene in the film where Jareth takes Sarah into a fantasy world (hence the fairies and her pretty dress) to show her her dreams and what could happen if she just says yes to him. Could this be the “trap” he has set up for her at Enigma Lain (did I spell that right?)?

Wonderful artwork as always; love the sort of tenderness shown in this picture, if one could classify any part of Jareth’s feelings as tender. Can’t wait for volume 4!

  12. Lindsey McBratney says:

After reading some of the coments, why do I get the feeling I’m the youngest RTL fan? Also Jake These books should be made into films, I mean look how many people love return to labyrinth and who knows maybe we’ll see Bowie in the roll of Jareth again.

    • Samantha says:

It would be great if they did make this a movie! …..but they’d have to animate it so David Bowie can reprise his role ( Jennifer Connelly could still do it for a live action.)

      • Angela says:

I think David Bowie could do live action again, too…maybe. I mean, did you see him in Zoolander? SQUEE!

        • Samantha says:

He still looks pretty good but you can tell that he’s aged which I don’t think Jareth has done in the story.

  13. Siiri says:

Jareth is best when he’s worried and unsure.

  14. Heidi says:

I just had to post on this!! I’ve been following the Labyrinth since I was about 3 years old and regularly check this site for updates.

They both look very young… this may sound like a weird theory but:
In V2 when Toby and Mizumi go to the prophecy archives it says something about true loves kiss being able restore order. Perhaps (now this is a big perhaps – but we’re all hoping it goes this way!!) Jareth and Sarah kiss, which reorders time and takes them back to the end of the film and this is him offering her, her dreams again – *Squeaks* – SAY YES THIS TIME!!!

    What do you all think??

    • Maggie says:

I really REALLY like that idea! ^_^ But when you put the whole manga series into view, it kinda seems like an odd ending… I think Toby should have some say in what happens

  15. Angela says:

The more previews I see, the antsier I get!!! How long has it been since we’ve seen THESE two together? It looks like Jareth is trying hard to see what Sarah sees but he can’t so he’s asking her! Her nails look scary, like Mizumi’s! I’m still doing my dance of agony over here!

  16. Gizelle says:

OMG!!! I can’t wait to get RtL #4 already!!! I knew this volume was gonna have a JxS moment! (the cover sort of blew it away) SQUEE!!!!!!!!
I really wish that they do end up together and that the true love’s kiss will be fulfilled by Jareth and Sarah! Cuz Toby and Moppet kissing looks sorta weird to me…
    Ooh! I can’t wait!!!
    TEAM JARETH FTW!!!

  17. Esther says:

I am tempted to color this picture. *w*
Argh! Just only five months away! I wish it was August. O_o

  18. Andi says:

Sarah looks so sad, though. :(

Something is not right. Which is why Jareth has that expression on her face.

A interesting picture, but it seems whistful and sad.

  19. JessicaDK says:

RtL is also not translated to Danish (Carlsen Manga, you’re so sloooooow!), which is why I am eternally thankful for Farao’s Cigars, who imports manga and stuff, including RtL. I’m so going to buy it next time, since I wanted to start from vol. 1, which they did not have.
To Dishwasher: A very big welcome! Now, if you make a joke about Jareth’s pants and the balls, you can truly call yourself a member of the Labyrinth community (these jokes are like a rite, aren’t they?) ;-)
    P.S. Lovely picture. Moar pleaz?

    • The Dishwasher says:

Hmm…perhaps my Linux OS is being weird, so this reply might end up in the wrong place…

      Thanks to all your welcomes!

How could one be a Labyrinth fan without ever mentioning Jareth’s crystal balls or tight pants? (Or sparkles). One could say I’m on the ball with all that. And I’m sure I read somewhere on this blog that the fans want a tighter-pants-wearing Jareth in Vol 4 and that this wish might just be granted. What boons interaction brings!

I do wonder if there is a Russian translation of Return to Labyrinth. It’s super that it’s been translated into French and Spanish, and Japanese too. But there is a large Russian Labyrinth fan community (apparently) and they are slowly finding out about RtL.

Also I wonder if Mr Bowie has a copy. :) You could autograph it and send it to him as a present, Jake!

As for the picture…can Sarah hold crystal balls without being affected by them?

  20. freak M says:

    Love this pic!
I should go into my TARDIS and go and read it now… and maybe watch the rest of season 5 of Doctor who, but … welll. I wont… it would not be fair… ;P ;)

    • Rachel R says:

@Freak M Hehe. Didn’t think I’d see another Doctor Who AND Labyrinth fanatic on here. I just got into DW and now it’s EVERYWHERE

  21. Terra says:

It’s previews like this that make me so excited for volume four. Now excuse me while I go and fan girl overload.

  22. ZOMG! :D I finally got the first two volumes of RTL this weekend! My mom bought them for me since I bought the 3rd book! :: squee :: Now all I need is the 4th volume. >3 Common birthday! D< GET HERE FAST SO THAT I MAY READ THE CONCLUSION TO MY FAVORITE FANTASY SERIES!!! dfgssdfgsdfgdg

  23. Kumi says:

Hello, another lurker here, who’s finally making a comment! I LOVE the RtL series. I think it’s wonderful. I really like this image of Jareth and Sarah. Sarah looks really sad here and Jareth looks worrIed (maybe even a bit shocked?). It really makes me wonder what they see within that crystal ball…

  24. Tink says:

Perty. In reply to what we think the end here is, I think that Toby and Mizumi are going to be duking it out and Sarah’s going to have to go save Jareth. Sleeping Bishi, hehe

  25. jo says:

Amazing. Never thought of something like that. Oh dear, I’m excited what’s about to unfold. (Idk why making an rpg game out of this is running around in my mind, though I’m not into programming that much… XD)
